On 29th April, 1915, the 2nd Leicestershire battalion of the 20th (Garhwal) Brigade, 7th (Meerut) Division of the Indian Army, moved into trenches at Croix Barbée near Richebourg where they stayed until relieved on 5th May. At 4.30am on 1st May the enemy opened up a heavy artillery bombardment of their trenches which destroyed the parapet in places as well as demolishing a dug-out. There was no infantry attack and after an hour the bombardment ceased leaving the battalion with over twenty casualties. One of these was Herbert Hussey who was killed.
